Since this weekend,we are facing Internet connectivity problems in the University campus. All the students and staff have been reporting this matter to the IT Services and I hope it will be rectified soon. I am posting this blog from the IT services, Show cross building.
Do these kind of internet connectivity problems crop up frequently? It would be interesting to know how their OIT or whatever else they call it is structured and staffed. Are their any restrictions with regard to access like no gmail for students and so on? How do the students pay for it or is it part of their fees? How are the guests treated for use?
ReplyDeleteAt least I experienced twice since I arrived here.Normally mail is sent to the IT Services for any problem/help. But today I had to go personally with the laptop. Always on working days there are two people available at the reception counter of IT Services. When problems are reported to them then they inform the concerned people. When I reported, the message was sent immediately like this-"Fault reported by Ramesh Gaonkar - VISITORS staff ()
ReplyDeleteEquipment type:laptop - wireless
Fault type:hardware
ITS Number:
Room number: Freeman Centre 1st floor
Comments:User can connect in our laptop area but is unable to do so in the Freeman Centre, can we check the ports in this area".
It was resolved for me in the afternoon and I got a mail from IT Services to confirm. When I enquired about the fault I got the reply immediately saying- "There were some issues with the way that new connections were authenticated to the network over the weekend. This was fixed this morning".
I do not know about restrictions on g-mail etc.But I have seen that sudents and staff do use webmail@sussex.ac.uk
IT service charges must be a part of their annual fees.
For guests log in IDs are created by the IT Services.
