This programme is set at Honours Level in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.

Programme Aims
a) to develop knowledge and understanding of the human past b) to foster awareness and understanding of historical processes which have a direct or indirect bearing on the present c) to encourage respect for historical context and evidence d) to reflect critically on differing interpretations of the medium and distant past e) to impart particular skills and qualities of mind relevant to the discipline of history f) to satisfy key criteria of historical knowledge and method, including i) an awareness of span and change over time; ii) understanding of geographical range (focussing particularly on Britain and Europe); iii)engagement with primary as well as secondary sources; iv)an ability to reflect on the theoretical underpinnings of the historical discipline; v) to foster an appreciation of the diversity of historical specialisms (including social, economic, cultural, political, intellectual, gender, oral, and environmental history) g) to satisfy progression requirements by teaching i) survey history, ii) particular historical topics or short periods, iii) comparative and thematic history, iv) historiography, v) documentary-based special subjects
Programme Learning Outcomes
The following are the leraning outcomes of the programme:
A. Knowledge and Understanding
- a broad and, in the case of particular topics, regions and special subjects, a deep awareness of key historical knowledge, events and debates pertaining to the 15th-19th centuries
B. Intellectual Skills
- Writing - Reading - Verbal expression - Basic visual/cinematic literacy - Handling of large bodies of evidence - Ability to distill and discuss complex arguments - Precis Construction of reasoned arguments - Rigour, discrimination, independence of mind - Sensitivity to and tolerance of different points of view.
C. Practical Skills
-the ability to formulate and articulate arguments in written and oral forms - the capacity to retrieve and utilise information of a diverse nature - organisational skills - ability to plan and execute projects to deadlines - effective information retrieval and analysis using traditional and e-based media - ability to work independently
D. Transferable Skills
- ability to read, write, and express oneself verbally in a variety of modes and registers - organisational, planning and execution skills - ability to work independently and with others to achieve personal and common goals
