This programme is set at Honours Level in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.
Entry Requirements
A levels (or equivalent) must include English Literature or the combined A level in English Language and Literature, at grade A
Offer Requirements
In the range AAA-AAB, including an A in English
Programme Aims
The aims of the programme are to: 1. study literatures in English across a range of genres and historical periods 2. analyse the production, consumption and reception of texts within their historical and cultural context 3. appreciate a range of literary traditions, both dominant and marginal, and their effects on cultural formations and identities 4. appreciate and understand a range of theoretical approaches to the study of literature 5. appreciate complexity and variety of language and genre 6. relate literary texts to other media and discourses
Programme Learning Outcomes
The following are the learning outcomes of the programme:
A. Knowledge and Understanding
Successful students will graduate from this programme with a knowledge or understanding of: A1: a range of literature from different periods of literary history including literature before 1800 A2: a range of literary genres, including poetry, drama, the novel and the short story A3: a range of different theoretical and critical frameworks and their role in shaping definitions and perceptions of literature A4: the historical, social and cultural contexts within which literary texts are produced and read A5: the richness and complexity of imaginative writing and narrative forms A6: the ways in which literary texts interact with other disciplines and media
B. Intellectual Skills
On successful completion of the programme, students will command a number of intellectual skills. These include: B1: critical skills in the reading and analysis of texts B2: ability to analyse complex arguments B3: ability to handle information and argument in a critical and self-reflective manner B4: ability to plan study time and research topics independently B5: awareness of generic conventions and their effects on communication B6: ability to convey the results of study and research, both in writing and orally
C. Practical Skills
On successful completion of the programme students will have developed a range of practical skills. These include: C1: Effective essay writing skills, including where appropriate, an element of creative writing, C2: Competence in structuring argument, both written and verbal through essays and presentations C3: Employing collaborative skills in group work, and contributing flexibly and creatively to the common goal of intellectual exchange C4: Utilizing a range of IT resources, including word-processing, email, search databases, text files and internet facilities C5: Working independently and to deadlines
D. Transferable Skills
On successful completion of the programme students will have developed the following transferable skills: D1: research and investigative skills D2: independent study and time management D3: ability to work in groups D4: ability to structure argument in written and verbal form D5: ability to analyse complex issues D6: ability to write in a range of modes D7: ability to use recognised conventions of notation and bibliography
