THE WEEKEND AT SUSSEX

The University of Sussex has five days working. Saturday and Sunday are holidays. So far I have observed that the University campus life on these two days is dull and the entire campus has a deserted look. The University library is open, canteen in the library, store in the York house, Bar next to Bus stop are open. No one is seen on the roads of the University campus. Hockey matches are played on the ground of Falmer sports complex by the community club teams. The question to me was What the students of University of Sussex who stay on the campus are doing during these two days of the week?
I asked a few students and got some answers from them. Some say that those students who are from nearby areas they go to their homes to meet parents at the weekend. Others say that they drink, smoke and sleep because it is their culture. Some students say that on Friday and Saturday nights they go to clubs and pubs and sleep during day time. Some go to work on part-time basis.   Here part-time jobs are easily available in super markets, shops, bars, hotels etc. Normally students are paid five to six pounds per hour.  Home students can work for 15 hours per week and overseas students can work for 20 hours per week. With this students can earn some money while studying. Some students must be studying very seriously in their rooms. Some do their weekend laundry work. Some go to Brighton city to do shopping. I have seen students buying grocery items and coming to the campus. These are the students who cook their breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have clicked some pictures, please visit my old blog to see AND DON'T FORGET.

  1. Sir, the pics were 'worth a thousand words'! I noticed that the road had zig-zags? Their campus life is interesting. They really have to 'earn' and 'learn' at the same time to make up for the tution fees.

What is the age group of the students there? and also what about the number of male/female students? Sir, did you engage/conduct any class there?

The zig zag lines, I think, means that you cannot stop on this road.

    Sir

A lot of the students that you photographed seemed like foreign students. Are they the ones who usually do the cooking for themselves on campus.

Is there a concept of a lot of people eating together in these dormitories? Or do eat whenever. You said something about cooking, what about cleaning afterwards? What about storage of food? What about utensils? how do people manage all this?

  3. And to add to this engaging messages, what do the international students eat? Their ethnic food or the local stuff? Are there stores selling ethnic masalas, ingredients and stuff like that? Is it affordable or much more expensive than the local eatables?

  4. Dear Sameena,
The zig-zag markings are only at certain places, and where 3-4 roads meet. The campus life is very good and the students really enjoy.Earn while you learn is most common here. The students to whom I know are in the age group of 19-24 in the first year.I do not have the statistics of male:female students ratio, but in the class definitely it is 40M:60F.There are no teaching assignments for me.

    Sir,
The overseas students cook their own food, and local students depend on the ready made food items available on the campus.
It depends upon how many students live together and the type of accommodation they have been given or chosen by the students.
Communal areas are cleaned on a regular basis by the university's maintenance staff but this does not include washing up. The students are responsible for keeping their own room and where applicable, bathroom clean and tidy.
The kitchens are equipped with cookers, fridge-freezers, kettle and most have microwaves. The students can either bring their own cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils or they can purchase a catering pack from the university store for £17.50.
All international students including me eat ethnic food.In Brighton you ask any thing it is available including Goan Pav.It is not expensive.

  5. It would be a good idea to explore the weekends outside the campus, in those areas where students go during the weekends.
How about music concerts, theatres, exhibitions, art galleries? Do students go to these during weekends?

  6. Yes, I will try to explore these areas.
