Sir Very good morning to you. The discussion which we had with you on 22nd Jan 2011 through teleconferencing was a fruitful one and everybody enjoyed the same though there were power interruptions. The concept of preparation of solution and it's dilution is very useful but it is not in that depth as per our FY/SY university syllabus but the same is demonstrated to them, however at TYBSc level our students do prepare standard solutions as required for expts. and they are examined by external examiner during their practical examination. As regards to question papers, we need to follow the pattern prescribed by the university but nevertheless the model paper shown by you can be given for an entrance exam/assignment. We were delighted by your exposure to the various activities being undertaken at Sussex University. Sir, we conclude with this for the day. With warm regards from myself and prof.NGR.
Sir, Thank you for the interesting and informative discussion , it was worthy to know that the students there take keen interest in whatever they do, and that there is discipline maintained . I particularly liked the open book exam as this method gives a deeper understanding of the concepts and this way of examination offers a challenge to both the students as well as the teachers, I am particularly keen on trying this in class. The MCQ'S also were very challenging and that way the students will remember what they learn for life unlike our students who are used to rote learning thus forget what they learn after the exam. Thank you Sir for giving us an insight into their methodology, it was very enlighting. regards to you Sir
Dr. Antao and Prof. Revonkar, Why not we try this method of assessment in our ISAs where you have the full freedom to decide the mode of assessment. Sharing a comment by two is not good.
Respected sir, First I would like to apologize for late comment due to technical difficulty. It was very interesting and interacting session. from your discussion we realized that in UK there is no HSS or College section but after their SSC they start with level courses. and to chose their higher studies they have to answer the entrance tests. we also realized that they have MChem or Mphy or Mmat which is not their in india. Their teachers role is like a guide ,rather than a one way traffic to complete portion as in india. Their assessment methods are very interesting and very simple. Do they have practical’s of application type where students have to find their own procedure methods to complete their tasks? It is also understood that there is no journal or practical exams at such but they are assessed at the end of every practical. Overall it was very knowledgeable to us. Thank you Vijaykumar Nazare.
Dear Vijay, No, Unless students pass the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) with good grade cannot be admitted to Sussex. There are universities in India offer integrated courses like Sussex. Application level problems are given to students to solve in the practicals.
Good morning sir.Your demonstration regarding teaching, learning, assessment technique at sussex was nice. Regarding your idea of assessment in ISA examination is nice but we have ISA examination every month hence portion is just limited and scope of setting questions is also limited.also marks are 7.5 with two sections 5 and 2.5 marks respectively.however the same can be practised for viva examination in practicals. sir may i know how many topics/chapters are given to students for self study by teacher.and also if there are any failures in examination what steps are taken by teacher towards such failures. with regards. N G Rivonkar.
Good morning Sir, You must have seen on our website the superb performance of two of our TYBSc students in the chemistry quiz among 8 colleges in Goa, conducted by AGCTA ON 25TH Jan ,and thus made our college proud. I have browsed through the courses on "Preparing to teach" and "Training course with workshops" for faculty conducted by T L D U. The courses seem to be useful. Now my question is: How are the teachers trained to help weak students or failures in a particular subject through these courses ? I feel that these type of courses could be had in our college with a specialized faculty in the subject. With regards, S A Antao
Prof. Revonkar, Are our ISAs in science subjects’ 7.5 or 15 marks each? Please check. Topics are not given for self study by the teachers. If a student fails in ‘sit’ and ‘resit’ examinations held in an academic year then, he is discontinued from the University. There are safety measures in the University to take care of students in academics, campus life and study related problems. Each student has an academic advisor, staff advisor and mentor. Please visit my old blogs on student mentors. Where are your other colleagues to comment more? So far only four members have posted their comments.
Dr. Antao, Please convey my congratulations to our students. I have seen here that the teachers are always available to the students to solve the difficulties in the subjects. The student can also take an appointment with the teachers and meet. Every course has an online discussion forum and any student can send their subject related questions/problems. Those who know the answer will reply this question/s. I don’t think so any teacher needs a special training for this. We do conduct faculty development programmes. Why do you raise TLDU point under the feedback on Chemistry courses?
Sir, Thank you for the reply to my comment. The Starting to teach training course is conducted separately for the ATs of Science subjects also according to your blog on TLDU and hence the query. We are looking forward to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the college in the next academic year. Wish you good health and regards. S A Antao
Dear Dr. Antao, Again your comments are irrelevant to the blog on "Feedback on Chemistry courses. However you will find my response to your comments on the blog TLDU, please visit. Encourage other colleagues to comment on this blog.
Dear Sir, It was nice talking to you and learning about chemistry courses from the University of Sussex. For me the course of interest was "Interface chemistry: Surfaces and Heterogenous Catalysis" which is a level2 course with code F1189 in the autumn term. Workshop is a part of teaching methods in this course. I would like to know how this workshop is conducted and evaluated. Is experiments part of this workshop?
Dear Sir, I was happy to know the learning process on the Chemistry Course from the university of Sussex. I wish to know the course "Redox & Electrochemistry" with the course code F1168 in the summer term. I wish to know the course content and the evaluation methodology. Regards G. K. Naik
Respected sir, thanks for your speedy reply. As per your instructions i have checked and also inquired with my colleagues regardig I S A exam. Sir our paper is of 100 marks with 75 marks theory and 25 practicals. theory( two I. S. A. s (15)marks plus one SEE (60)marks ie 75 hence one I S A is of (7.5)marks. Sir i would like to know from you as to how many parents come to inquire about the progress of their ward and how often do they come to college. with regards. N G R
Dear Pratibha, Congratulations! The University of Sussex uses D.Phil. as the term for Ph.D. programme. The student is required to apply online with research proposal and academic references. The Chemistry Department of Sussex is ranked 5th in UK and two faculty members are Nobel Prize winners.
this is wt regards to ur mail abt ISA. Sir ,v in chemistry dept set a paper of 15 marks for ISA. I js nw discussed wt rivonkar sir . wt he meant ws v conduct 2 ISA'S of 15 marks each n then tk average, which is 15 marks. i.e 7.5 marks per ISA(after taking average).earlier v were conducting ISA of 7.5 marks bt after dt till date 2 ISA'S of 15 marks are conducted. thanks n regards, manjita
Dear Sir, We conduct two ISA's (ISA1 & ISA2). Each ISA is of 15 marks, so ISA1 + ISA2 would be a total of 30 marks. We then take average of the marks of the two ISA's. This average mark would thus be out of 15 marks for both the ISA's. This is then divided into two equal parts and marked as ISA1 and ISA2, thus making each ISA of 7.5 marks. Have a good day Sir.
dear sir, thanks, yes sir, i agree dt average is taken only once. sir rivonkar just meant that average which is out of 15 for 2 ISA's is equivalent to 7.5 per ISA. have a nice day sir, regards manjita
