  1. dear Sir ,
Nice to see you after long time. Thanks for giving the information. The way they give the assignments in the form of sheets along with the solutions is something different then what we do here. we also can also use the same method.
    Regards.

  2. Dear Sir,
    That was Rakhi!
    Now it is me.
What I found was they expect students to LEARN and not teacher to FEED. This kind of education system is not in our college and at large in India.
If we give same way question sheets and keys student will tend to by heart it(I am not saying that we should not do it). unless we change our assessment system it will be not very effective to adopt any of their practices. Other thing is that of number of subjects and number of lectures they have to attend. Just compare 130 and 900!
Most of the subjects we give are compulsory and they do not have any choice. That puts them down. When will they study after attending 5hrs of lectures and ADD-ON and HONERS 2hrs that too par day?
We tend not to think of students and keep saying 'TEACHERS ARE NOT WORKING'.

we must put our heads together.
    Thanks for every thing.
    Masur

  3. Dear Sir,
    This is Amonkar.
I was very much impressed by the way they have designed the syllabi. It is so precise that there is no confusion.
    Regards.

  4. Dear Mrs. Rakhi,
Yes, if we follow this method definitely it is going to help our students.

  5. Dear Masur,
I agree with you but anyone can adopt good methods of teaching and learning.
I think you have misunderstood. Here at Sussex, the teachers give problems in Mathematics in the form of exercises after teaching, that too online and students are expected to solve and submit them online on or before the due date. And after the due date the teacher uploads the solutions of problems for students to understand whether their answers are right or wrong and to know where they have gone wrong without meeting the teachers. It’s not only the methods of assessment should change, I would say change is required in methods of teaching also. I did not understand the comparisons of 130 and 900. Semester and Credit systems are different and cannot be compared.
If we give choice to our students to choose subjects of their choice then, some departments will be closed. By offering UGC recognised add-on courses and Honours courses we trying to improve the employability of our graduates. It’s not 2 hours per day, it is per week. Perhaps the role of teachers needs change!

  6. Dear Prof. Amonkar,
We should follow this method of framing the Syllabi.

  7. Sir that is the point . Why not think of the students? If one is expecting them to study then where is the TIME? I perfectly know how the system work,my point is none of the student will even think of solving problem they will just wait for the solutions! And if it is as assignment they will take help of friends i.e. just write down answers as they blindly take down NOTES in the class!
IF we want to adopt any of the methods we have to first change their idea of EDUCATION. Now in that 'their', students, parents, teachers (including me) and most important policy makers are included.
Credits ARE calculated according to the NUMBER OF LECTURES student attend. In Sussex it is 10 weeks term 2 lectures in week that makes 20 lectures minus two of exam makes 18 credits course.AND when we say that 130 credits par year that is indirectly we are saying that NOT MORE THAN 3 courses is spring and fall and not more than one (or two) in summer. SO THEIR STUDENTS GET THAT MUCH TIME TO THINK AND STUDY, LEARN, KNOW AND NOT BI HEART.
IN any way Our students are slogging for NOTHING. And they DO complete 900 credits per year. AND we expect them to do ADD ON and or Honors (with exam and) 20 credits!!
If it is for Employ-ability then What the regular education for?
Role of the teacher has to change that doesn't mean we have to expect them to do thing which will be burden on them for there is no method to make their job easy. WHICH IS TO try and inspire students to study.

  8. Dear Masur,
You have not understood the credits system and how the credits are calculated? Certainly it is not on
the basis of number of lectures any student attend. Please visit my blog posted on 6th January 2011 "Award of Degrees".

  9. Dear Sir,
I just was looking what you were showing and one can see exactly those many lectures taken for that paper. If not then how one decides how many credits to be given to a paper?
I will come again for other department presentation and we can then verify that one credit is equivalent to one lecture.

  10. Dear Masur,
This is your interpretation. The course convenor/s decides the number of credits required to complete the course successfully and it is approved by the University.
Did you visit the blog posted on 6th January 2011?
You are welcome for other presentations.
