Teaching and Learning Development Unit

The University of Sussex has a Teaching and Learning Development Unit (TLDU). This unit organises and runs courses and events to meet the needs of the faculty in teaching. There is a course on “Preparing to Teach” for the Associate Tutors (ATs). This online course provides information on the structures of Sussex and Higher Education in UK, the role and responsibilities of ATs. This course helps ATs for first and subsequent teaching sessions.
Preparing to Teach at Sussex online course consists of nine topics and under each topic there is a learning activity. The topics covered under this course are: 1. The University of Sussex and Higher Education in UK. 2. The Associate Tutors: employment, induction and expectations. 3. Your first teaching session. 4. Teaching and Learning. 5. Student Support at Sussex. 6. Teaching your subject. 7. Assessment, Marking and Feedback. 8. Next Steps. 9. How was it for you?
Similarly, there is another course on “Starting to Teach” training course. This training course is conducted separately for the ATs of Science subjects and Humanities and Social Sciences. Four workshops are conducted under this training programme which will cover the areas such as planning sessions and supporting students, teaching and learning activities, marking and feedback and evaluating your teaching and course.

  2. Dear Sir,

I am regularly reading all the columns in the blog...i hope that all the info that you have obtained will help to make a positive change at our college. sir, can you get a little more information about the 'Teaching learning processes'...Also i would like to know about the 'code of conduct' for students and 'work ethics' for faculty, as we find that there is absolute sincerity from the students there when it comes to assignments or examinations. what makes them so sincere...what prevents them from cheating, resorting to plagiarism etc? Awaiting you reply. Thanks sir.

    Regards
    Nandini

  3. Dear Mrs. Cora,
The B.Ed course and the ATs training courses are different. These courses prepre tutors specifically to teach in a Sussex University environment.

  4. Dear Dr. Nandini,
I may have one more session to the faculty members of Zoology Department of our College on teaching and learning. I prefer to interact with you at that time.
There are only two examinations 'sit and 'resit' in an academic year. The student will loose the year if s/he fails in these two examinations. All the Schools and Departments strictly follow the University's rule on Plagiarism. So all students are very serious about their studies.
All staff (teaching & non-teaching)of the University are expected to work every day from 9.00am to 5.30pm with one hour lunch break and 5 days working in a week.

  5. Dear Dr. Gaonkar,
This course conducted by TLDU on "Learning to Teach" seems meant for those that are moving towards teaching at Sussex. Is there a course for senior teachers specifically designed to help them use latest technology?
