  1. sir,
I appreciate the effort taken by you to show us the tutoring , lecturing, conducting practical etc. at Sussex. It shows how the teachers follow thorough professionalism in preparing of the course materials, practical handouts etc. It looks like they are sole responsible for the course they are running. what would happen if there is no required strength of students for a particular course? what does it suggest? what are the usual steps taken to "Save" a particular course if any?
    Thank you for the presentation.

  2. Sir
kanchana here. I would like to know few things about their courses.
    1. it looks like students use readymade kits for their practical work where they have to perform just as directed which involve minimal preparation time. but how far it is feasible and regarding the chemical preparation they will acquire minimum knowledge. Here we give equal importance to both preparation and performing the practical.
    2. is there any reason in giving project at first year level?
    3. how do they dispose waste chemicals specially of molecylar biology practicals?
    4. hoe do they promote their course/
    5. why there are separate teachers for theory and practical of the same paper? Is it because of many batches?
    thank you Sir
    waiting for your reply

  3. Sir,
Its a nice experience, the interaction which we had yesterday. I appreciate the teaching-learning method, assessment method they have.
-I am very much impressed with the practicals where there is no separate journal as such and the method.
-The online assessment method where they get sufficient time to answer, to refer the books and other resources etc.
-The group project where each one has to submit separate report without copying others.

I am happy to see that they have Ecology and Conservation as one subject/course. I would like to know more about the course material in Ecology and Conservation. Also would like to know about course duration, detailed syllabus and sample lecture and practical presentations.
    Thanking you,
    Regards.

  4. Dear sir,
    greetings,

The lecture material(power points) with minimum writeup and more self explainatery diagrams/ points seems best way of presentation unlike with many of us who put all spoken matter on the slide and its not real lecturing but reading.
Secondly the practical assessment interested me. Giving a brief questionare and student making diagram after visualizing, is a real way of understanding helps in correlating theory with practicals. How about in molecular biology (DNA/RNA/Plasmid isolation, detection)? How do they show records? could you focus on that.
In your earlier posted photographs of labs, we get to see how lab arrangements are done. As Iam aware of the labs and lab culture their,I always wanted to highlite the lab setting. This is something we can give a thought to for new labs and avoid our labs giving appearence of pastry/ icecream parlors.
lab safety measures is also something we can pick up.

    cheers
    sangeeta

  5. Sir, I am very much impressed by your conversation with us. You have really taken lot of pain to study the system of academic atmosphere there. You have the same through videoconferencing this will help us to improve our teaching methods.
I further convey you or your good health and prosperity
    Thanking you

  6. Sir,
It was a nice interactive and learning session that we had with you yesterday.
Its good to see that here at Chowgules also we are trying to come/be at the level like that of University of Sussex.
I liked the thing that the lectures taken are podcasted and uploaded on moodle.
Further, I am sure that an interactive and learning session like this one will be of great help to us.
    Thanking you,

  7. Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your pains-taking efforts to share the Biology course material of Sussex University with all of us.It was very relevant.

I appreciate the lecture contents and the simple words and diagrams used by them to explain complicated topics like Structure of proteins etc. I think at the undergraduate course level itself the basic concepts are made very clear to the students and thats how they can go very farther in these areas.

I would like to know a few things from you sir.
    1. Is it compulsory for the students to bring the lab procedures when they come for the practicals?
    2. Are there any aptitude tests done before a student selects a particular course?
3.Do you find the students more dedicated and hardworking than in India? as you said they come very well prepared for every class... what makes them do so?

I would be happy if we can view a complete podcast of a lecture.

Looking forward to another interesting session with you,

    Dr.Priyadarshini Pujari

  8. Sir, First of all i would like to thank you for enlightening us about different aspects of the university. I am very glad to know that, there are so many life science courses.
I would like to know if Bloom's Taxonomy of learning is extensively used for preparation of lecture notes.Kindly give more details about how students are evaluated based on tutorials.

    Thanking you

  9. Dear Sir,
It was very informative and interesting. Some of the practical aspects which is being done by their students in microscopy, is also done by our students. Our students also measure the size of the cell under different magnifications and express the same in microns or mm. Similarly we are asking students to prepare solutions of various strengths in percentage, molarity, normality and ppm and also to determine their strengths from the given data. It is similar to what you had put in your earlier blogs testing essential skills in science.
Sir, I also would like to know how the attendance of students is taken as you told us that there are 350 students have taken a course in Cell & Molecular Biology.
The lectures which I engage I give the names of the books along with authors from where I have taken the matter at the the end of lecture and for T.Y.B.Sc. student I give my books also.
If possible send the course content in Ecology & Conservation/Environmental studies.
    With warm regards,
    Veeresh

  10. Hello Sir,

Thank you for taking the trouble of explaining to us how the course at Sussex university is structured and organised.

I would like to know if there are seminars organised, wherein students select a paper related to any topic of their choice from any international journal and present it..?If it is so.., then how are they assessed..and how do the students review each others performance in the seminars?...considering that this is one aspect that creates research interest among them.

    Thank you...
    Regds,
    Dorline.

  11. Dear Dr. Uma,
Thank you very much. We should adopt this professional approach. It is the responsibility of the course organiser to design and run the course. The most important part of this is the on-line feedback obtained on the course from the students. Based on this information changes are made immediately. There are minimum and maximum number of students for each course. The course is discontinued if the minimum number of students is not there and the students have to change the course. This suggests that the course is not popular and not required. This gives the opportunity to the course organiser to re-organise the course and make it more interesting. No sympathy is shown to save any course if it is not required.
    Dear Dr. Kanchana,
There is a course on “Essential Skills....and I have posted 2-3 blogs on this. Please visit. This course teaches only the preparation of chemicals. Please attend tomorrow Chemistry session. Projects are based on the type of courses may be at any levels of a programme. There is waste management system which takes care of recycling. This is outsourced by the University. The courses are continuously revised based on the feedback received from the students. The staff members who are well known in their field are sent for lecturing and conducting practicals.
    Dear Dr. Divakar,
We have to adopt some of these good practices. I will find out about the course on Ecology and Conservation.
    Dr. Sangeeta,
I think we should have discussion on specific matters again. Yes, I agree with you about safety measures which our students should use while doing practical.
    Prof. Mishra,
    Thank you very much.
    Ms. Kim,
I think we should also podcast our lectures for the benefit of our students.
    Dr. Priyadarshini,
The students must have practical hand outs while entering the laboratory. In fact this is available on ‘Study Direct’. The students should print this. No aptitude tests are conducted. But I am sure the students choose their courses in the first year based on the degree programme through which they would like to be graduated. If a student fails in ‘sit’ and ‘re-sit’ examinations then the year is lost and may/may not be allowed to repeat or continue the degree programme!! We will organise a podcast again in the first week of February.
    Ms. Divya,
I find Bloom’s taxonomy of learning is used in the assessment methods of different courses. The tutorial class consists of 5-6 students and the reading material is given prior to the tutorial class and the students are expected to come prepared. The performance of students is based on the participation of students in the discussion.
    Dr. Veeresh,
Do first year students prepare different solutions?
The record of attendance is decided by the course organisers. In Cell and Molecular Biology course where the students’ strength is 300-350, the attendance is taken in tutorial classes and practicals. Since the lectures, tutorials and practicals are interlinked I find everybody attends lectures including me. Please show lecture wise, the book title and pages to be read in your lecture notes in CLAAP. I will try to find the information which you have asked.

  12. Dear Ms.Dorline,
Certain courses do have seminars and how these are conducted and assessed is posted on my blog on Friday,22nd October, 2010. Can you visit that blog please?

  13. Dear Sir,
We make the students to prepare the solutions in the practicals after showing us the calculations.
I will take your suggestion and put the page nos. and title of the book in lecture notes on CLAAP.

    With warm regards,
    Veeresh

  14. Dear Sir,
Thank you very much..I read the blog posted by you on 22nd of October...and have got my answers...I really like the way the whole seminar system is structured at Sussex...It would be a nice idea if we could incorporate this for our students of X11 standard..so that through these seminars they would be exposed to the different areas of biology...and can choose their further careers appropriately.
